Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

I’ll check the data sheet again and note any special requirements. If there something I’m unsure on, I’ll let you know here.

Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

3.6V is the rated voltage of the CMOS battery the laptop shipped with, so I’d presume it is correct for the RTC chip the laptop uses. There is a clock crystal that I can trace and tone out that goes directly into the RTC chip. This should be the 32.768 kHz oscillator. I do not have an...

Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

For the CTX, I’ve noticed it intermittently will throw a beep error on POST that translates to a CMOS RAM read/write failure. So that one perhaps has an issue with the CMOS RAM. Could it be corrected with a new CMOS battery? I’ll find out at some point in the future. What I do know is that for...

Documenting obscure 90s laptop brands - CTX EzBook

https://archive.org/details/ezbook_700_driver_cdrom The CTX EzBook 700 Driver CD-ROM has now been archived. Thanks to DeltaDon for sending the disc in! While we already had EzBook 700 drivers, there is more on this disc then there was on the CTX website way back when.

Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

I have now installed a working battery in the Alpha-Top and the RTC still isn’t working. It worked for a while, but now fails to advance time again. Jury is still out on whether it’s going to stop detecting the CPU properly.

Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

Someone in a discord server told me the glitchy date and time (at the very least) is a problem he's run across before with PhoneixBIOS and that those need a good CMOS battery. I do hope that fixes it!

Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

Heat may indeed play a role. Both laptops run very hot, for sure. They're both using desktop chips in a laptop (although the Green751 is a supposed lower-voltage "mobile" version, but both are socket 7), and neither have fans, just passive cooling via a heatpipe. The Alpha-Top is especially bad...

Vintage Laptop Fault - PhoenixBIOS CPU Detection failure, Real Time Clock Error, bootlooping

I'm writing this in order to help get ideas on what could be causing a failure on multiple vintage laptops I've run into. The issue goes like this: On a cold boot (off for a day or so), the laptop will usually work just fine. If it's been on for more than a few minutes, if the laptop is...

NanTan Early 1990's laptops Guide (386/486/Pentium)

Ahhh, that's you. Gotta love Nan Tan's constant revisions. They never stopped, 2000s Clevos are the same way... Not much I can offer unfortunately.

On a further check, I do believe this is correct for your model. Here's an image made by @creepingnet showing the same thing:

This is the best I can find (from a manual we have) but it might be for a different version of the 9200 motherboard.

NanTan Early 1990's laptops Guide (386/486/Pentium)

“Hey boss, so I have some bad news. Those new high capacity ROM chips we paid extra for for the 9200 BIOS? Turns out the Award BIOS program only takes up like, half the space” “Well now - we’re not just going to put those dollars to waste now are we? Think of something useful to put in that...
