Klaus' RAM/ROM cartridge finally got me off my butt to do it. I think it's time to implement something practical with the Tutor, which was my first computer and I still have the actual computer that was my first, and this is part of laying the groundwork.

Nice article. I knew nothing at all about Tomy. I did recognize Sarah Purcell....as for Shadoe, I must have, thankfully, repressed all memory of that character. I do think it is important to document the experience of some of these historical wannabe attempts at early computer product advertising- "No Parental Guidance Required". Seemed like the idea was to tell the buyer, "You may be too ignorant to figure it out, but your kids will". Ahhh the 80s.....

My folks didn't remember that campaign exactly, but they did agree with the sentiment that they wanted a computer that didn't require expertise on their end - after all, Dad's computing experience prior to that was Fortran IV on an IBM 7090. Doesn't seem like it was enough to move sales, though, because my parents selected it because it was the cheapest option available to them at the time. (They were pretty skeptical of the T/S 1000.)

Fred R. Rated, though ... that'll stick with you. Especially the William Tell ad!
