TRS80 Model II drive terminator

Weird. Well, I've already got the header coming so I'm going to install it anyway and see what happens. Thanks for your patience. :)

Thank you for trying this. I'm still debating whether to solder headers on my FDC it but if you succeed I probably will.

SUCCESS AT LAST!!!!!

Jumpering in the cable to set ready didn't seem to work, but putting a jumper onto J0 between pins 21 & 22 solved it! I'm now reliably reading and writing to the HxC as an internal drive. I'll check out configuring the HxC as DS0 and DS1 internally sometime tomorrow, but at this point I've got a fully working system with a reliable long term storage system!

Thanks Chuck and pski! Maybe this week I'll get some time and be able to take some photos of the whole power supply, FDC connections, etc.

@dhoelzer I want to give this a shot, probably this weekend, so can you confirm that the only jumper you have is on 21 & 22 and you are connected on the 34 pin J1?

Yes, that is confirmed.

I'm actually going to solder on another header (as soon as they arrive) to hook up a 1.2 meg TEAC that supports RDY rather than DC that fell into my lap the other day. :) I'll do photos while I have it out.

I finally built my 50pin to 34pin adapter based upon the work of others on this forum and others in the past. I am trying to get my HxC working on the external FDC interface of my Model II with the late FDC adapter. I am very close.

The HxC is configured as Drive 1. It is the only device on the external FDC interface. At first I was getting no activity on the HxC and a drive not ready error from TRSDOS but then I jumped pin 21 & 22 as dhoelzar mentioned to force ready and started making some progress.

I see the system accessing tracks on the HxC when I boot up TRSDOS 2.0. It moves to track 44 a few times then the system boots as normal. When I try to access the drive via "DIR 1" I see the HxC flashes RA (meaning that the system is attempting to read from the drive) but then TRSDOS hangs and eventually returns a 49 (hardware error). I've tried a few good known IMDs of TRSDOS 2.0.

I suspect I require termination on this cable.

My next step is to put the HxC in the middle of the 50pin cable and add some sort of termination at the end. Can someone point me to how to best terminate this cable? I have one of the termination plugs used for the older FDC cards. I'll probably try plugging that in on the end of the cable once I pickup a male IDC connector.

All of my work to get it running was done with CP/M. Once it was working, I use it as DS0 and boot directly from it...

Old Thread Pete but did you figure out how to properly add the termination to your cable? I have 3 model II's.. and two floppy expansion units. None of the model II's came with termination plugs so I am guessing I need to make them.

Nine years ago....man. I don't think I ever got back to trying an HxC on the external floppy connector. It works fine on the internal connector without any additional termination which I've done many, many times.

Sorry for the dead thread but I'm just following in the footsteps. Yeah I can use the internal connector as well but it would be nice to use the external so I dont have to re-open the chassis.

Does anyone make or sell the model II terminators?

You can make one pretty easily. All it is is a loopback plug.
